What is a Verruca?

Here at Total Health Care, we often see patients concerned about small, rough growths on their feet. One of the most common culprits is the verruca. If you're in Farnworth, near Bolton, and think you might have one, this blog post will tell you everything you need to know.

What exactly is a verruca?

A verruca, also known as a plantar wart, is a wart that develops on the sole of your foot. They're caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that infects the skin. Verrucas can be quite uncomfortable, especially when walking or standing, as they're often located on weight-bearing areas.

What do they look like?

Verrucas typically appear as rough, cauliflower-like growths with tiny black dots in the centre. These black dots are actually thrombosed (clotted) capillaries, which are small blood vessels that feed the wart. They distinguish verrucas from regular calluses or corns. Verrucas can be solitary or appear in clusters.

How do you catch a verruca?

HPV thrives in warm, moist environments like swimming pools, communal showers, and gyms. Walking barefoot in these areas increases your risk of infection. The virus enters the skin through tiny cuts or abrasions. It's important to remember that not everyone who comes into contact with HPV will develop verrucas. Some people are more susceptible than others.

Are verrucas contagious?

Yes, verrucas are contagious. They can spread to other parts of your body or to other people through direct contact. Avoid touching your verruca and always wash your hands thoroughly after any contact. It's also a good idea to wear flip-flops in communal changing rooms and showers.

Do verrucas go away on their own?

While verrucas can sometimes disappear on their own, it can take months or even years. In some cases, they may even spread or become more painful. If you're experiencing discomfort or the verruca is spreading, it's best to seek professional treatment.

How can a podiatrist help?

At Total Health Care in Farnworth, near Bolton, we offer a range of effective treatments for verrucas. These may include:

  • Cryotherapy (freezing):  This involves applying liquid nitrogen to the verruca to freeze and destroy the affected tissue.

  • Salicylic acid:  This is a topical treatment that gradually peels away the layers of the verruca.

  • Other advanced treatments:  Depending on your individual case, we may recommend other treatments.

What can I do to prevent verrucas?

  • Wear flip-flops in communal changing rooms and showers.

  • Keep your feet clean and dry.

  • Avoid walking barefoot in public places.

  • Don't share towels or socks with others.
